Market concentration can also be a problem as, in many cases, the expected high efficiency based on economies of scales is not always achieved. However, mergers and acquisitions can also raise a climate of distrust between managers and clinical professionals, with poorer workers’ satisfaction and higher rates of absenteeism. They can also impair patients’ perception of quality and satisfaction. Hospital mergers have many potential benefits, such as economies of scale, greater purchasing power, more possibilities for the acquisition of expensive equipment, opportunities to share high-cost technology, the creation of hyperspecialised units for specific pathologies, and more. They have become very frequent in recent years, although failures are still very common. Many reasons lead us to study the effectiveness of hospital mergers.
